In November 2024, Computershare employees completed the Trek for Tech, an 80km adventure through the Grampians in Victoria, Australia. This trek raised over $90K of critical funds for the World Youth International School in Nepal, supporting the development of a new IT college and providing students with access to modern technology, including computers, tablets, and software.
A Trek with a Purpose
The journey began in Melbourne, where the group all met in person for the first time and were inspired by a heart-warming pep talk by Computershare’s Chief People and ESG Officer Lucy Newcombe. They then visited Igloo Vision, where they participated in an immersive 360-degree experience showcasing the World Youth International School. It's sometimes not possible for donors to see first-hand the results of their fundraising and the impact of their generosity. That’s why it was so exciting working with the Igloo Vision team the past few months creating an insightful and interactive 360 tour of the World Youth International School including the Computershare-funded Change a Life Boarding Centre and the IT College. Thanks to the innovative tech now available, and the kindness of Igloo Vision for enabling us access to their site, we were proud to showcase the World Youth International School in a way that had never been seen before.
From there, the team travelled to their accommodation at Grampians Getaway to physically and mentally prepare for six days of hiking, rock climbing, and team-building challenges. The management team on the ground included hiking experts Lisa and Ian Murphy from Big Heart Adventures, fitness coach Rob Coad from Athletica, breathwork facilitator Seth Westhead, Partnerships/Team Leader Gabbi Ocenasek, and World Youth’s General Manager Terry Hoey.
Day 2
Day two began with Rob taking the Computershare Trek for Tech trekkers through a morning warm-up by a serene lake. The group were pumped to be heading out on their first hike together, guided by Lisa & Ian to the Chautauqua Peak and surrounding areas. The team covered approximately 12km over the day while navigating challenging terrain in the heat. The swim and breathwork with Seth in the late afternoon was the perfect recovery.
"The highlight of the experience for me has been the team and the people around us. Many of us had never met before, but we came together, connected, and achieved something fantastic. It’s been so uplifting and inspiring." – Anna MacFarlane, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
Day 3
On the third day, Computershare Trek for Tech trekkers set off for an incredible adventure to Wonderland! Hiking from Halls Gap to the Pinnacle, then continued to Sundial Peak, travelling over a 15km trek throughout the day. The terrain was quite challenging, with thousands of steep sandstone rocks to climb up and navigate. Despite the sun and rain, the group experienced breathtaking lookout points, lush landscapes, and stunning rock formations.
Day 4
Day 4 was all about resetting, connecting, and conquering fears for the Computershare Trek for Tech trekkers. The trekkers kicked off the day with a vital breathwork session by Seth Westhead on the bus to mentally prepare for the day's activities. This really allowed the group to centre themselves and learn some beneficial breathing techniques, which proved helpful later in the day during abseiling.
The group then participated in a Smoking Ceremony before engaging in rock climbing and abseiling with Hangin Out in the Grampians. The breathwork and team camaraderie kept everyone motivated and inspired to take on the challenges. The group was also honoured to visit the sacred Ngamadjidj Shelter and surrounding Gariwerd areas, guided by local Indigenous guide Tya.
"To give back to communities and provide tools and training for education is so important. Education is the best gift you can give someone." – Marnie Reid, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
Day 5
The day began with a heartfelt pep talk from GM Terry Hoey and a warm-up stretch led by Rob from Athletica HQ. Motivated and ready, the team embarked on a 14km hike from Sundial Carpark to Borough Huts on the Grampians Peaks Trail, led by Lisa and Ian from Big Heart Adventures. The journey included a 530m elevation gain, rock hopping over and under boulders, caves, and magnificent rock formations. The reward for their efforts was the stunning 360-degree views at Mount Rosea.
"The funds will support students in Nepal with skills and tools they need to succeed. Who knows what they can achieve?" – Craig Payne, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
Day 6/7
The Computershare Trek for Tech trekkers rose bright and early to tackle the Grampians' tallest peak, Mount William. Reaching the summit of 1167m was a significant achievement for the group and a fitting end to the mountain hiking portion of the week! But it wasn’t over yet. The team then embarked on the ultimate test of physical and mental strength, pushing themselves to their limits to reach the 80km trek goal with a 13km military-style pack march. The efforts of the team were incredible; they all powered through to reach their goal.
"The hike on the final day was incredible—over 1100 meters in elevation gain! It showed incredible teamwork and speaks to the nature of the company we work for." – Mandar, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
"I’m so proud of this team for overcoming challenges and achieving our goal. The support of the World Youth International team has been incredible." – Anna MacFarlane, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
"The dedication, teamwork, and passion made this trek truly extraordinary. Covering 80 kilometres to achieve fundraising, personal, and fitness goals is no small feat. It’s been an honour to witness the group’s commitment to World Youth International’s mission, and I’m deeply grateful for your continuous support. Special thanks to Lisa, Ian, Rob, Seth, and Terry for their incredible efforts. Together, we’ve shared stories, experiences, and a journey that goes beyond this trek. Thank you for making such a meaningful impact!"– Gabriella Ocenasek, WYI Partnerships/Team Leader.
Making a Difference
The trek embodied strength, determination, and teamwork while supporting a greater purpose—empowering education for over 700 students in Nepal. The funds raised will transform learning opportunities, equipping the World Youth International School with the tools needed to prepare students for a brighter future.
"This journey wasn’t just about the trek—it was about making a difference. Education is the greatest gift, and I’m so proud to have been part of this effort." – Marnie Reid, Trek Participant, Computershare Employee.
The trekkers took pride in their fundraising efforts and the impact of their accomplishments. Education, they emphasised, is the greatest gift one can give.
