Ann Hoey is best known first and foremost as our Founder, Robert’s Mum, and of course second to this, as World Youth International’s Secretary, but what you may not know is the extraordinary and integral role she has played in transforming many lives around the world through World Youth International. And what better way to celebrate all she has contributed and achieved than on International Women’s Day?
Ann has been a driving force behind countless sustainable development initiatives, leaving an enduring impact on communities worldwide. Her work aligns seamlessly with this year’s International Women's Day theme: 'Accelerate Action.' Ann’s dedication has not only empowered individuals but has also contributed to advancing gender equality and creating opportunities for women and girls globally.
In 1999, Ann, alongside her husband Ralph, established the World Youth International school and children's home in Nepal. Today, this remarkable institution provides education and shelter to more than 750 students each year. Many of these students are girls who are without access to quality education, would face limited opportunities. Ann and Ralph's efforts have broken down barriers, giving these young women the tools to build brighter futures and inspiring them to become leaders in their own communities.
Her compassionate reach further extends to Africa, where again with husband Ralph, in 2013, they led the construction of Mama Ann's Odede Community Health Centre in Kenya - a name chosen rightfully and lovingly in Ann’s honour. This vital facility now delivers free or subsidised healthcare to approximately 17,000 - 20,000 patients annually. Access to healthcare is a cornerstone of gender equality, as it ensures that women receive the medical support they need, from maternal health services to critical care. This support empowers women to live healthier, more secure lives.
Beyond these life-changing projects, Ann is a mentor who has guided countless individuals guiding them on their personal and spiritual journeys. Her guidance and wisdom inspire others to embrace a life of service, empathy and purpose, encouraging women and men alike to step up, support one another and drive collective action.
Ann’s story is one of resilience, selflessness and compassion. She has transformed personal tragedy into a mission of hope and healing, building a legacy that not only uplifts communities but actively accelerates action towards gender equality.
Ann is not only a mother and Secretary BUT also a force of change, a beacon of hope and a true champion of humanity. This International Women's Day, let’s celebrate Ann’s unwavering commitment to making the world a more just and equal place for all.
