Altaira's Ongoing Support for Global Healthcare
National labour hire agency Altaira has continued their support for World Youth International, providing funding towards Health Camp in Kenya. Facilitated by Nurses In Action Volunteers from Australia & New Zealand, Health Camps enable people living below the poverty line to receive vital health checks and treatment. This is the third Health Camp Altaira has generously sponsored. This initiative has helped improve the quality of life for hundreds of elderly people in vulnerable communities, demonstrating the power of global collaboration in healthcare.
Healthcare Challenges in Kenya
Kenya faces numerous development challenges, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line. The average life expectancy for a woman is just 48 years due to the wide range of diseases they face daily. Many elderly individuals take on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren after losing their own children to HIV. This places an enormous financial burden on them, forcing them to continue working in fields just to provide a basic meal for their families. There are vulnerable communities that have limited or no access whatsoever to healthcare.
Altaira’s Commitment to Better Ageing
“Hearing about the lack of healthcare, and particularly aged care, within developing communities abroad highlights how fortunate we are in Australia to have support from our government and private institutions,” reflects Jelena Giro, Director of Altaira. “At Altaira, we believe we can all work together to create a better ageing experience not just for Australians but for populations globally. Well done to the Nurses In Action Volunteers who are dedicating their time to help within vulnerable communities.”
Impact of Altaira’s Health Camp
In January 2025, Altaira’s Health Camp provided life-changing medical services to 183 patients, with an additional 34 young girls receiving education on menstrual health and reusable period pads.
During the camp, Nurses In Action Volunteers treated a wide range of conditions, including:
Chronic illnesses: Hypertension, osteoarthritis and peripheral neuropathy
Infectious diseases: Malaria, pneumonia, urinary tract infections and conjunctivitis
Respiratory conditions: Asthma, allergic rhinitis and upper respiratory tract infections
Skin conditions: Contact dermatitis, eczema, scabies and impetigo
Gastrointestinal disorders: Stomach ulcers (Helicobacter pylori), gastroesophageal reflux disease and constipation
Women’s health conditions: Bacterial vaginosis, vaginal candidiasis and pregnancy-related care
Other medical issues: Cataracts, anaemia, dehydration, sinusitis, back pain and eye trauma
The Power of Global Collaboration
The success of this Health Camp, determined by the large number of patients seen and treated, highlights the importance of global generosity and collaboration. By pooling resources and expertise, we can bridge healthcare gaps and bring life-saving medical services to communities that need them most.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Altaira for their unwavering commitment to improving healthcare, especially within ageing communities, on a global scale. Their support has been instrumental in positively changing lives throughout the world.
