The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is home to around 30 million people, the vast majority of whom adhere to Hinduism or Buddhism. Nepal is wedged between two major Asian superpowers (India and China) and enjoys a wide range of climatic conditions, from tropical forest to snow-capped mountains and glaciers. In fact, this landlocked nation is one of the world's leading hiking destinations as the mountainous north has eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest.

Though most visitors come to Nepal to experience the majestic Himalayas, these people tend to see only the small areas that receive considerable economic benefits from tourism. One simply needs to step behind the backdrop of the beautiful mountain scenery and into the remote regions of Nepal to learn that much of the population lives in poverty. In spite of substantial external development assistance, Nepal remains one of the least developed countries in the world. High disease prevalence, low adult literacy rates, natural disasters, food security and availability problems and high rates of child malnutrition are just a few of the challenges the Nepali people face on a daily basis. This is where members of our Overseas Action Program can make a lasting impact.

Overseas Action Program Nepal

The Overseas Action Program (OAP) in Nepal is a team program for people between 18 and 30 years of age. It runs for five weeks and is led by a professionally-trained Team Leader. Should you choose to join the OAP in Nepal, you will live with a host family within a rural community and work on development projects nearby.

As a team, you will work alongside local community members on sustainable, community-driven development projects as sourced by WYI's in-country staff. Individually, you may choose to take on a personal project in a field which interests you. This might be at a local school or community centre, with a women's group or youth group, or within a medical clinic (relevant qualifications essential). The Team Leader of your program will collaborate with you to find an individual project that benefits the community and suits you.

The structure of your work days will be determined by the OAP Team Leader according to a roster system. You will either work on the major team project or participate on a pre-arranged individual placement, and you will generally have one or two days' break from work each week.

Once your program has completed, you are welcome to join the 13-day Adventure Package as a way to celebrate and unwind with the rest of your OA group. The Package includes a thirteen-day trek through the majestic Annapurna region of the Himalayas. Should you choose to take part in this physically challenging adventure, you will see breathtaking scenery and snow-capped peaks, befriend the fun-loving and hardworking porters, stay in cosy village tea houses, meet friendly local residents, and even take part in some whitewater rafting.
