Success In India!

- Alison Wells, Overseas Service Project Manager
In January WYI sent its first volunteer, Jillian Ash, on an Overseas Service Project to India. WYI participants work with Indian non-government volunteer organization, IDEX (Indian Network for Development Exchange). IDEX designs and locally supports volunteer and travel programs that are educational, culturally immersive, and beneficial to the social development of local communities in need. WYI participants play a valuable role in the social development of rural Indian communities in need while simultaneously benefiting from a cultural immersion that is both educational and inspirational. Jillian spent her time in the Goa region of India, an area known for it's beautiful beaches. However beyond Goa's beaches lie many communities still in need of education and social services to reduce poverty. Click here to read all about Jillian's experience!

Team Ubuntu !!

- Anna Mortenson, participant

In November 2009, 8 participants and their team leader Heather Lynn arrived in Kenya not really knowing what to expect. As they embarked upon their Overseas Action program, 8 strangers became 'Team Ubuntu' meaning "I am because we are". The team spent their first 5 weeks in Odede working on the construction of the Child Rescue Centre. They then moved to Mutumbu where they began the "Ubuntu Project" as well as building a computer classroom for the North Gem Community Centre.

Click here to learn more about their amazing work and the "Ubuntu Project".

On Top of the World!

- Isabel Wheeler, Assistant Team Leader
In November 2009, a group of dedicated girls headed to Nepal for their Overseas Action Program. Throughout their program they became swept up in the beauty of Nepal and the incredible spirit of the Nepali people. The girls worked on a medical centre in the village of Ramche, working to provide medical care to the local villagers. Click here to read Issy's account of their fantastic program!

We are pleased to announce that we have another 5 children that need immediate sponsorship. All sponsored children attend the World Youth International Primary School and all funds are distributed by WYI Australia and Nepal. A basic sponsorship package starts from just $360 per year (less than $7 per week). If the idea of sponsorship interests you click here to see who needs a sponsor!

Australian Central Lottery

WYI is fortunate to again be a participant in the Australian Central Community Lottery. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise up to $10,000 to assist children and communities in both Kenya and Nepal. However, we need YOUR help! For people living in South Australia and the Northern Territory, you can become a book seller/purchaser, and for those living in the rest of the world you can contribute by purchasing lottery tickets from WYI! Tickets are only $2 each and there are 165 great prizes. The lottery runs until 30 June 2010 and WYI will receive 100% of the ticket proceeds...what a great deal!

We are also looking for anyone in Adelaide who may be able to spare some time to help sell books. We have secured an outlet at West Lakes shopping centre from the 6th of April to the 11th of April. If you are able to donate your time, wish to order books or purchase tickets please contact Rebecca Murphy (WYI Lottery Coordinator) on 0413 125 933, or via email at murphysx3.5@hotmail.com

"Jazz in the Park"

For the last 10 years, WYI has hosted our annual event, Jazz in the Park which has always generated a great deal of support and excitement within the Adelaide community. This year's event was postponed due to the ever increasing amount of local events during the month of February. WYI is currently looking at rescheduling the event to a date later in the year when the temperatures are a little cooler and there are fewer Adelaide events. We look forward to your continued support and will be in touch once the dates are finalised.
