Overseas Service Program

The Overseas Service Program offers individual placements for adults of all ages, ranging between one and six months in length.

Volunteers on the Overseas Service Program are guided by the support of highly knowledgeable local in-country staff but are given a high degree of independence and flexibility to adapt their placements for maximum impact and sustainability.

Choose to work in a pre-existing placement, or work with WYI staff prior to your departure to facilitate a placement that best reflects your goals.

Placement options are designed to maximize the experiences and best utilise the skills and passions of its participants. Volunteers have taken on placements in both community-based and professional fields, including teaching, nursing, occupational therapy and speech pathology.

Placement options exist in the current structures:

OSP Community Placements (1-3 months) are perfect for individuals who wish to make a meaningful contribution to a developing country on a community rather than specialised level. Do you have the time and passion, but are you unsure of where your skills could be best employed? Placement options available include children's home support, teaching assistant roles, street children's outreach programs, health and sanitation projects, education and awareness campaigns and supporting community groups in income-generating projects.

OSP Professional Placements (1-3 months): Trained professionals can greatly contribute to local communities by offering the skills and knowledge of their specific field to facilitate capacity building and address shortfalls in resources.

OSP Teaching Placements (3 or 6 months) are available for qualified and non-qualified teachers. Qualified teachers will be placed straight into a hands-on role in the classroom. Unqualified teachers will complete a TESOL training course prior to their departure to prepare them for their placement. The course offered by WYI is provided by The English Training Centre and can be completed online or via post. If you would like a TESOL qualification added to your community placement, contact our office for further details around pricing and logistics.
