What is Step Out Australia?

Step Out Australia is World Youth International's Australian-based national volunteer program.

Don't have the time/funds to volunteer overseas? Then why not volunteer from your own home! WYI has groups of people in each state of Australia who are the drivers of WYI's fundraising, promotional and campaigning activities. These teams are run by passionate and motivated people who are willing to STEP OUT of their comfort zones to help people STEP OUT of poverty. They meet regularly to discuss and take action on global issues of poverty and injustice, and to share their own stories with each other.

Since its inception in 2009, Step Out has raised almost $60,000 for much needed projects in Kenya, Nepal and Cambodia all through grass roots community events. From Halloween boat cruises to staging week long art exhibitions, our Step Out teams are always creating new and exciting ways to unite the local and global community and make a stance for positive change.

Step Out is not just about fundraising though. It also brings together like-minded and passionate people and create supportive networks all across Australia. So if you have ever been overseas and returned home to that dreaded "reverse entry culture shock", or perhaps never travelled at all but would like to mingle with really friendly people and learn from others experiences then we invite you to get involved.

How do I get involved?

One of the things that makes Step Out Australia really unique is that you can have as much or as little involvement as you like. We are always looking for people to take on leadership roles and bring their new ideas to the groups, and if you are short on time you can commit to a period, or to being a support for the group.

To find out more, please complete an online enquiry form and our Step Out National Coordinator will be in touch with you shortly to give you the details of what is happening in your state or territory. Or if you prefer, you can contact the State Coordinator of the state you live in whose details you will find below.

Select your state above to hear from their current leaders about what's been happening in their teams. As a National Step Out Australia group, we get together once a year for a National Event and Workshop, held in a different state on a rotating basis. This is an excellent opportunity to meet people from all around Australia, extend your network and learn from other teams. In 2012, we are also holding our first every national campaign, Tip For a Cause. Read below for more details on what we are up too as a national team.

Dare2Bare:

Step Out Australia kicked of 2012 in style with their first ever national event and workshop. From 12pm on Saturday the 14th, until 12pm Sunday the 15th of January, 21 volunteers from all around the country took up the challenge and participated in Dare2Bare. They gave up their beds, all possessions, luxuries, gidgets and gadgets for 24 hours and spent this time living in a park in Melbourne with nothing but the clothes on their backs and $2 in their pockets. The endured Melbourne's coldest summer night in 3 years, fought off hungry possums, got free hypnotherapy, practiced their skipping skills, and made a pretty epic 'spoon train', and all in the name of raising funds and awareness. The workshop that pre-ceeded the event also brought together Step Out Leaders and participants from every active state and territory group to share their inspirational work over the last year and plan for an even bigger and better 2012.

Step Out Australia National Campagin - Tip for a Cause

Tip for a Cause launch in QLD 2011 with huge success. The goal, to enlist the staff of various cafes, each pledging their tips through the month of August to World Youth International. The pitch, each cafe could choose one of 4 countries (Nepal, Kenya, Cambodia and Peru) and put from 90-100% of the money they raised directly to a development project in their elected country. The outcome, 4 cafes raising over $3000 and several projects benefitting from a school building in Nepal to a community store in Kenya. The best part was we were able to keep cafes in the loop and show them exactly where their money had gone on completion of the projects through emails and photos of the finished products. Following the success of 2011's campaign, this year Tip for a cause will be launched nationally with Step Out coordinators and teams from around Australia joining forces to deliver what may be Step Outs biggest fundraising campaign yet.
